GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION
After a decade or more has passed, suddenly the emergence of a new cordless heavy duty clipper from a manufacturer who has a proven pedigree in engineering quality is “exciting!” This is one section of the clipper market in which traditionally there has been little to choose from! The German manufacturer Aesculap once again steps on to the centre stage and throws down a challenge to all clipper manufacturers – introducing a product born of new technology that mirrors what the iPhone did to the then mobiles of the day!
The corded mains Econom II – known as the GT 474 machine has a long established pedigree stemming back to the days of the early Aesculap SE models. S.E models earned an unrivalled reputation with many including the black and white dairy cattle showmen – known for their notoriously high standards in clipping. The new cordless CL GT800 body retains many of the proven features of generations of Aesculap clippers especially in relation to the all-important head and blade driving mechanism, but incorporates a lot of new technology in the on/off switch, the high quality electronics used including the battery charge status electronics. The all-important hand grip area has a shaped section (16.5cms circumference) in the body casing design to give a much more comfortable hold during the clipping operation.
Proven design features, in the blade driving carrier system and blade tensioning which include a “locking” nut to hold the tensioning of the blades once you have set them. (Not a feature seen in many makes!) Blades are simple to install on the clipper head and the head’s internal parts are easily cleaned after use.
Unlike the majority of large cordless machines where a degree of power is normally lost at the expense of going cordless the Aesculap Econom CL models are the exception. Powered with a new and powerful motor they reproduce driving power equal to and matching the corded GT474 mains powered models. This therefore places them in the heavy duty category equal in power to mains powered machines. The higher cutting stroke speed (2750 strokes per minute) compared to the horse version (2250 strokes per minute) allows for a faster clipping of cattle.
One of the predominant features of all Aesculap machines is the engineering quality that has evolved to produce “vibration” free machines. Vibration of the clipper head is probably one of the two most “objectionable” factors to any animal undergoing clipping and whilst the temperament of each animal will differ, few enjoy vibration especially in some of the more sensitive head areas.
The high air intake feature reduces the build-up of any heat and therefore as with all clipping machines it is necessary to ensure you keep the air filter at the rear clean and free of any hair build-up.(Both sides of the air filter screen.please!) Far too often this escapes attention and results in unnecessary over heating of the motor! (Animal hair has an almost magnetic attraction and very soon (and usually un-noticed) clogs the air filter severely restricting the flow of cooling air!)
The Econom CL GT800 (the clipper handpiece) is supplied complete with a single battery pack and GT 501/GT502 blade set – which when fitted weighs 1.4kgs. When you first pick it up and hold it – there is a suggestion of heaviness! However having said that if you look at the few machines which it can be compared against – namely as a battery in the handpiece unit – it is actually marginally lighter!
Measure that against the slim styled and shaped hand grip (16.5cms) this compensates with good holding and easy manoeuvrability during the clipping process.
The three major features that give this machine that something “new and exciting” as well as lift it into a new technological era are the “touch screen” on/off switch, the battery charge status, and the powerful new Lithium-ion battery power pack. (Of course there are other parts hidden away inside the body that are equally technologically new and of equal high quality!)
TOUCH SCREEN ON/OFF SWITCH:
The “touch screen” on/off switch is a radical change from the traditional on/off type switch which will no doubt cause a few to “stumble at the first hurdle” until the technical reasons are understood and appreciated. The on/off switch will only react after 0.5 seconds as a protection against inadvertently switching on or off and consuming battery power.
Be mindful – that to prevent the battery from discharging when the machine is not in use, an electronic connection between the Lithium-ion battery and the internal control system automatically is cut. Therefore to restart the machine you need to press the “symbol” on the battery charge status (which will illuminate) BEFORE you press the on/off touch screen button.
Really it is very easy to operate once you have experienced the machine a few times, especially if you read the operating manual which is advisable for a number of reasons.
BATTERY CHARGE STATUS:
The battery charge status is indicated by a maximum of five small red LED lights displayed in a semi-circle at the rear of the battery pack. Each of the five “dots” represents 1/5th (20%) of the battery power
By briefly pressing the symbol it immediately becomes illuminated for a few seconds with an appropriate number of red LED dots forming a semi-circle and will indicate the current charge status of the battery unit which is displayed in 1/5th units of available power. This highly innovative system gives you instant information as to the current state of the power pack at all times.
LITHIUM-ION BATTERY UNIT
Each fully charged battery is stated to clip for about 70 minutes. The average battery unit re-charge time is stated as 70 minutes
Lithium-ion batteries signal a big development in battery technology and many are to be found in a wide range of consumer electrical products. Clearly they are set to become the major power means of the modern cordless animal clipper and as such these modern batteries really require the consumer to become educated as to the ways of best keeping batteries at peak performance levels.
Whilst we give below recommendations for storage of the battery, we would strongly urge users to make both the time and effort to carefully read the manufacturers instructions before using the machine for the first time, and certainly familiarise themselves as to the recommended method of battery storage – whether long or short term prior to any intended storage period.
BATTERY STORAGE
Lithium-ion batteries are likely to experience a loss of capacity and performance with any prolonged storage. It is recommended therefore that in the event of storage Lithium-ion batteries are only stored in a fully charged condition, and that they are re-charged once a month.
CLIPPER “SET” SELECTION
The Aesculap Econom CL clippers may be purchased in either of two versions – The version GT804 contains all of the above mentioned individual items but is only supplied with ONE Battery power unit.
If however you wish to acquire TWO battery units then you need to purchase the Aesculap Econom CL GT806 which also contains the same individual items as described but has the additional second battery.
Whilst both the GT804 and GT806 models can be used for horse clipping as well as cattle clipping, the Econom Equipe CL (purple body casing) for horses is the recommended model and has several differences which are……
1. The stroke rate is reduced to from 2750 to 2250 1/min. (This is concidered preferable for horses.)
2. It is a fraction lighter on our electronic scales with both blades and battery fitted at 1.35kgs
3. Instead of being supplied with the blades GT501/502 it is supplied with the Aesculap specialist horse blade GT505/502.
4. The handpiece colour is purple and not blue.
In all other respects it appears identical and like the cattle blue version is available with either one or two batteries as selected.
PLEASE NOTE : We are advised that it is currently not possible to fit a sheep head to this machine.
